Frequently Asked Questions

How are taxi fares calculated?

Metered taxi fares combine three parts: a base fare (flag drop) charged when the trip starts, a per-mile or per-kilometer rate for distance, and a per-minute rate that applies while the cab waits or crawls in traffic. Tolls, airport pickup fees, and night or holiday surcharges are added on top.

How accurate is this taxi fare estimate?

The city presets reflect typical 2026 tariffs and get you within roughly 10–15% of a real metered fare in normal traffic. Heavy congestion, route detours, tolls, and surcharges can push the actual fare higher, which is why we show a range rather than a single number.

Is a taxi cheaper than Uber or Lyft?

It depends on timing. Metered taxi rates are fixed by regulators, so they don't surge. During rush hour, bad weather, or big events, rideshare surge pricing often makes a regular taxi the cheaper option, while off-peak rideshare fares frequently undercut the meter.

How much should I tip a taxi driver?

In the US and Canada, 15–20% is standard. In the UK and Ireland, rounding up or 10% is common. In Australia, New Zealand, and India, tipping is appreciated but not expected.

My city isn't listed — can I still use the calculator?

Yes. Choose "Custom rates" and enter your local base fare, per-mile/km rate, and waiting charge — you can usually find them on your city regulator's website or printed inside the cab.

I run a taxi or cab company — can I get a booking calculator for my website?

Absolutely. We build instant fare estimators, online booking systems, and SEO-optimized websites for taxi and private-hire companies, so customers book with you instead of a rideshare app. See our taxi web design page or contact us.
