Frequently Asked Questions

Does domain age affect Google rankings?

Only indirectly, and far less than most people assume. Google's John Mueller has said repeatedly that domain age itself is not a ranking factor. What an older domain usually has is a longer backlink history, established brand signals, and a track record of consistent content — and those absolutely affect rankings. A ten-year-old domain with no links will not outrank a one-year-old site with strong coverage.

How is domain age actually calculated?

From the registration date in the domain's registry record — the day it was first registered by anyone, not the day you bought it. If a domain was registered in 2009, dropped in 2014, and re-registered in 2020, most registries reset the creation date to 2020. This tool reports what the registry currently publishes.

Where does this data come from?

Directly from the official domain registries via RDAP, the protocol ICANN mandated to replace WHOIS. There is no third-party database in the middle, so the dates are the authoritative ones. Nothing you enter is logged or stored — the lookup runs in your own browser.

Why does it say no data for some domains?

Two reasons. A few country registries — New Zealand and South Africa among them — run no public RDAP service at all, so no automated tool can retrieve their dates. Others, including Australia and Japan, publish records but redact the registration date under their privacy rules. In both cases the domain is fine; the date simply isn't public.

Should I buy an expired domain because it's old?

Be careful. Age alone is worth very little, and expired domains often carry the exact problems that got them abandoned — spam link profiles, manual actions, or a topical history unrelated to your business. If you are evaluating one, check the backlink profile and the Wayback Machine history before you consider the age at all.

Can I get a tool like this on my own website?

Yes. Free tools are one of the most reliable ways to earn links and qualified leads in competitive niches, and they keep working long after a blog post stops. We build and maintain calculators, checkers, and audit tools for service businesses — get in touch and we'll scope one around the searches your customers are already making.
